The African savannah is home to a great deal of animals that you can’t find anywhere else. With open plains and a lack of many forested regions, the animals got used to running and sticking to the bushes to avoid detection from their would be prey. Of course, if you’re as large as a rhino is, the predators usually avoid you, so there’s not much need to hide, anyhow. And the Great Rhino is the key figure in this Pragmatic Play slot, which was released in April 2018. It offers a medium volatility with a 500x fixed jackpot being the biggest score you can land in the game. It offers several special features to prospective gamblers, such as super re-spins with the highest paying symbol in the game and a pair of seemingly regular free spins with a slight twist!
The offered visuals are good, but they don’t particularly stand out one way or the other. The rather flat, single-colour backdrop somewhat ruins the feeling of the savannah and the rhino focus they might have been going for, especially since there are quite a few animal noises included to make it seem that way. Ever worse, we see a possible backdrop on the intro screen when we first boot up the title, which just makes it even worse in our book. The animals themselves look rather cool, so you’ll find flamingos, meerkats, crocodiles and a cheetah, as well as some playing card icons like A, J, Q, and K. The gameplay is decent, though it’s nothing amazing, either. The core loop focuses around saving up enough cash until a feature hits, and this sort of feature heavy approach is rather common in slots nowadays.
So, during normal gameplay, you can only count on an occasional Wild coming through to help you, but there are two special features you can trigger to improve your winning chances. The first are the super re-spins, which are activated when two or more fully stacked rhinos appear somewhere on the playing field. The game will pay any existing wins, and will make all rhino symbols sticky, before rewarding you with three re-spins. The symbols re-spin, and every time a new rhino icon lands, it rewards an additional re-spin. At the end of the feature, all the rhino symbols are added together to pay, but if you’ve won fourteen or fifteen rhino icons, you will win the major or grand fixed jackpots, worth 375x and 500x respectively.
By contrast, the second feature, the free spins, is usually a bit more profitable, if a bit harder to activate. Winning three bonus symbols on the second, third and fourth reel is enough to activate the feature, and it rewards ten free spins. During the extra turns, all rhino symbols are Wild, and the super re-spins cannot be activated during the feature. This leaves you with a well-rounded title that’s a rather decent affair. It doesn’t do anything unique for gameplay, and some visuals could stand to be better, but it has good symbols, strong features, and a lot of polish. If you liked other Pragmatic titles, you will likely enjoy this one, too.
