There’s only so much online slot developers can do to spruce up classic fruit machines and make them look fresh and not like something we’ve seen many times before. Oryx Gaming went with a subtle approach with Fruit Twist, keeping all the good traditional stuff but still succeeding in implementing a theme and a few decent animations.
Classic fruit machines would usually feature only one paying line and three reels, and on them pictures of cherries, grapes, plums and so on. In a way, Fruit Twist keeps the basic vibe featuring mostly fruit icons, but instead of a black background we have a nice picture of a sandy beach during sunset. Even the water looks as if it were gold, the sky is red and palm leaves are peaking from above. Since the symbols include lemons, watermelons, oranges, pineapples, coconuts and kiwis, the theme is clearly one of summer, beach holidays, refreshing cocktails and lemonade. Okay, so the graphics are not very detailed and the interface appears static most of the time, but as long as you keep spinning the reels you will feel the action, don’t worry.
Fruit Twist is played across 5 fixed paying lines, and the reel grid has a standard 5x3 configuration. The control panel allows you to set the size of the coin and the number of coins to bet per line. Autoplay can be switched on after any given spin and a sequence of automatic spins will replace the need to click on the Spin button over and over again. The feature offers 10, 25, 50 or 100 automatic rotations. The Max button spins the reels with the maximum bet. A small clock icon by the main Spin button is actually a history report on your previous accomplishments in the game.
All winning combinations must appear from left to right and only the highest win is paid for each active payline. The highest paying symbol is the big red lucky seven surrounded with all the fruits. The blue diamond is the game’s Scatter, but it only awards scattered wins – it does not trigger any bonuses.
Released in 2018, Fruit Twist has an appearance of an online slot released at least a decade ago. The developers at Oryx Gaming clearly made the game like this on purpose, looking to capture the simplicity of a slot machine with a small number of lines, deprived of all the complications and the razzle-dazzle of modern slots. These days, online slots look more like video games and it appears that with this title the developer was trying to avoid this. Fruit Twist is as simple as it can be, only with juicy fruits and a view on the beach – and a top payout of 10,000x the bet. Fire it up if you’re not going anywhere on holiday this year!
